Small Group Ministry's Program

Each of us brings a separate truth here, We bring the truth of our own life, our own story. We do not come as empty vessels,

But rather we come as full people --people who have our own story and our own truth. We seek to add to our truths and add to our stories.

All manner of people are here:

  • needy. . .
  • joyful. . .
  • frightened. . .
  • anxious. . .
  • bored. . .

We all bring our truth with us. May we all recognize the truth and the story in everyone's life.
And may we hear and honor the truths that we all bring as we gather together. . . Together we have truths. Together we have a story. Together we are a community.

What Are We?

It is our way of connecting members, friends, and newcomers in intimate circles for sharing, learning, serving, and spiritual growth.
Groups of eight to ten people generally meet one or more times per month, in a member's home or at the church.

The group leader guides each meeting through:

  • In gathering/chalice or candle lighting.
  • Time for each person to share
  • Discussion and sharing using short readings and focus questions
  • Feedback
  • Brief closing

Each meeting is intended to deepen our sense of community and to open us to the unfolding meaning of our lives. Groups covenant with one another regarding privacy, childcare, how often to meet and other considerations. Groups are open and welcoming as newcomers are invited or referred to the group. New groups may form at any time.

Small Group Ministry's Goals:
  • LOVE ourselves and each other;

  • LEARN about the mysteries of our world and our spiritual paths;

  • SERVE our community and the needs of one another;

  • MAINTAIN personal connections and a caring community with and for members of our groups.

History

The Small Group Ministry Program at First Parish began in 1999 as a means for the members of First Parish and others in the Kennebunk community to develop deeper intimacy and closer community with one another; to deepen our spiritual lives; to explore the BIG QUESTIONS of life; and to provide a vehicle for joining together to serve the larger community. These are not therapy groups, but exploration groups.
