PROGRAM DETAILS

Speaker Shay Stewart-Bouley:

It is an annual tradition at First Parish to serve our community by inviting a speaker related to social justice and celebrate Martin Luther King, Jr.

The First Parish Social Justice Committee is excited to announce that Shay Stewart-Bouley will be the keynote speaker for our 15th Annual Breakfast in honor of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. on Monday, Jan. 15, 2018. Warren McPherson will provide vocal and keyboard music.

Shay’s fame is spreading fast through her blog and website, Black Girl in Maine (BGIM), which she introduced in 2008. The blog often focuses on matters of social justice and systemic racism. Her writing on race and diversity also has been featured in a variety of Maine and national publications.

Born in Chicago, Shay had to learn a bit of Yankee ingenuity when she moved to Maine in 2002. She bridged her work with the homeless in Chicago to working with low-income and at-risk youth in Southern Maine. As Executive Director of Community Change Inc. in Boston, she organizes and educates for racial equity. Even though she works in Boston now, she is indeed still BGIM, continuing to reside in Maine.

Music: Warren McPherson

Warren McPherson of Portland hails from Jamaica. After winning a prestigeous scholarship to study piano in Alberta, Canada, he completed his studies in Jamaica then in 2009 came to the University of Southern Maine, where he excelled in piano performance. He tours nationally, plays in several bands, and is music director of the Green Memorial AME Zion Church in Portland.
