First Parish Unitarian Universalist Church (FPUU) is seeking a talented and collaborative Music Director to lead and grow our vibrant music ministry. Located in the heart of Kennebunk, Maine, FPUU is a welcoming and engaged congregation that values community, creativity, lifelong learning, and spiritual exploration.
Music plays a central role in the life of our congregation. We are seeking a musician and leader who can inspire participation, support meaningful worship experiences, and cultivate a thriving music program that reflects the diversity, inclusivity, and values of Unitarian Universalism. The Music Director serves as a key member of the church's leadership team and works closely with the Minister, Music Team, choir members, guest musicians, and congregational volunteers. This position is ideal for someone who enjoys both the artistic and relational aspects of music ministry and who is energized by building community through music. Our choir is a small but dedicated group, and we are looking for a leader who can nurture its strengths while helping it
grow and evolve over time.
What You'll Do
- Lead music for weekly worship services and special services throughout the year.
- Provide piano and/or organ accompaniment for worship and congregational singing.
- Direct and grow an adult choir, including weekly rehearsals and worship performances.
- Select and prepare music that complements worship themes and engages a range of musical interests and abilities.
- Coordinate guest musicians, soloists, volunteer musicians, and other musical contributors.
- Collaborate with church leadership to integrate music into worship, congregational life, and special events.
- Steward the music program's resources, including instruments, music library, and budget.
What We're Looking For
- Experience directing choirs and leading vocal ensembles.
- Strong piano and/or organ skills.
- A degree in music or equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- The ability to inspire, organize, and collaborate with volunteers.
- An appreciation for diverse musical traditions and styles.
- Interest in supporting the mission and values of a liberal religious congregation.
Experience with Unitarian Universalist congregations or other faith-based music programs is welcome but not required.
About the Position
This is a part-time position averaging approximately 12 hours per week year-round, including Sunday worship services and weekly choir rehearsals during the church program year. The position also includes opportunities to coordinate music for weddings and memorial services by separate arrangement.
Compensation is competitive and commensurate with experience with a range of $14,500-17,000 per year. The church's music resources include a fully restored 1900 Hook & Hastings organ and a Yamaha C3 grand piano.
